Blankets
to Afghanistan
12,000 pounds of blankets to be shipped to Afghanistan
were packed by 120 volunteers from the San Francisco Bay area.
The Refugee Emergency Relief Shipment was organized by the
American Friends Service Committee and the Tzu-Chi Buddhist Relief Volunteers
(home-based in Taiwan). More than 5,000 blankets, sleeping bags and comforters,
in a 40-foot shipping container, will arrive in Northern Afghanistan by way of Tajikistan.
Individuals as far away as Hawaii and Alaska contributed blankets
to the American Friends Service Committee's Afghan Relief drive,
which is working with the Afghan Coalition of Fremont, California, to ship the materials to Afghanistan.
Over 5 million Afghans are at risk of starvation and exposure this winter.
